The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is responsible for hunting throughout the state. Waterfowl hunting for Black or Mottled Duck, American Coot, Pintails, Mallards, Mergansers, Redheads, Wood Duck, Scoters, Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Long-tailed Ducks, Eider, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Scaup, and Gallinules is allowed during season and within specified limits in some 39 designated Waterfowl Management Areas (WMAs).

In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service operates eight National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs) in South Carolina -- Carolina Sandhills, Santee, Waccamaw, Cape Romain, Ace Basin, Pinckney Island, Savannah, and Tybee -- Of which only two (Ace Basin and Savannah) allow waterfowl hunting during season.
