The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources is responsible for hunting throughout the state. Waterfowl hunting for Black Duck, American Coot, Pintails, Mallards, Mergansers, Redheads, Brant, Wood Duck, Scoters, Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Blue Geese, Scaup, Long-tailed Ducks, and Gallinules is allowed during season and within specified limits in some 29 or the state's 79 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).

In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service operates 2 National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs) in West Virginia -- Ohio River Islands and Canaan Valley -- Both of which allow waterfowl hunting during season.
